When I saw my friend, Jeff's photos especially landcapes, I realize that I'd used to do landscape photography when I was still working as a Valuation Assitant. At that time, I was still using a film compact camera. I do a lot of landscape for landed properties & photomerge the photos which turn a wide angle which look like a fish eye. Those days, digital photography have not been born yet. So, lately, while doing my assigment here in KK, I snapped the city & Likas Stadium in a vertical position of 5/6 pics each angle with free hand, no tripod. Then I merged the photos in photoshop. And here's the result...Well, though it's not really perfect as I can see but worth it...

Pulau Mengalum Trip...

AWESOME TRIP!!

It's been quite a long time I've never been to pulau, maybe 10 years I guess??? Hmm...This time, it was our assigment to Pulau Mengalum.

Before I touch the ground, I was kind of speechless...the sea, the beach....oh woww! For me, it just like a paradise...

The mysterious Mengalum Anchor is located in Mengalum Island about four hours boat ride from Kota Kinabalu is a mystery, that is no one knows how and when it came to be lying on the island. It appears that its earliest recorded existance was by Captain Edward Belcher in H.M.S. Saracen's log in 1854. The wrought iron anchor is however believed to be a Richard Pering improved anchor or Admiralty (British) anchor, manufactured from ca. 1819 to 1845. Local reports of the anchor, as early as 1931 described it as a "keramat"; it is venerated by fisherfolk who assumed its supernatural powers and which cannot be removed from the island. During Sultan Brunei's visit here at Kota Kinabalu, I was given an assigment to photograph Sultan Brunei at Marina Sutera Harbour & TLDM Sepangar. All the while, I never had the chance to see Sultan Brunei personally and this time to see him at close range. I was thinking if I could get myself a picture with him but to no avail. Anyway, my duty is to photograph him. Sadly, I can't disclose pictures of him here in my blog coz it is strictly confidential and not allow to publish it.

It sounds like that I just entering a new world or being reborn, that is, year 2009, Ox's year! For crying out loud!!! My broadband connection has been giving me problems in accessing my blog & other's blog for the past 2 months. Thanks to my brother! Coz he applied a streamyx at home. He just came back from Shell offshore at Dubai. As we all know, working at offshore has a very very good pay & my brother got the job in october last year. I'm glad that he got the job. Hmm...I wish I could have that job too. But somehow, I am well content with what I have now. Praise God!

Mmm...right now, I'm still thinking about what am i going to do with my blog. My blog is suppose to be a photography things where I upload all my shots & to share my experience in photography. But when I come to think of it, I already have my photography things, that is at my Flickr. And soon, my bro, Kid Amos is gonna upload some of my wedding shots in our own website at http://www.kdkcproduction.com/about.html in February.

I can see that all bloggers alway updating their blogs every now & then. Not only that, new layout, headers, templates, widgets & etc...Well, I'm just amazed what they are doing. I hope I can do that too...Anyway, I just keep myself slow & steady.

I got am email from DPS(Digital Photography School) & while I was reading it, I came across this article(the above mentioned title) by Tris Hussey. It is almost similar to my thought about what is being a photographer.

His quote is,"You can have thousands of dollars worth of gear and not be able to take a good shot to save your life (contrary to what Aston Kutcher might like you to believe). You can also use a cheap, plastic toy camera and do some amazing things. Cameras are tools. Just tools. Don’t think that just because the guy next to you has a lens bigger than a small child, than his shots will be better than yours. Just shoot, have fun, and always keep experimenting."

Early Saturday morning at 5:30am, our team drove to Pekan Tuaran. It was still raining since last night. We had our breakfast (makan soto) at Tuaran before we're started off shooting at Nika Bridal Studio where the married couple had their make-up. Then we proceed to St John Chapel for the wedding ceremony. There were 2 couples at that time and we notice that the other couple had hired a photographer & a videographer. But the 4 of us, as photographers. 4 photographers???! Should we called ourselves as FANTASTIC FOUR PHOTOGRAPHERS??? Hmmm, no lah....Weird huh....

Thereafter a lunch reception was held at the bride's residence located at Kg Bundung, Tuaran. Still, we're on mission there. While doing our job, their family members served us some beers...ah well, why not, this is a kampung area & it's a must, drink it lah...

My Piano

Like I said earlier, that I will never leave my piano skills. I just composed a new intrumental song entitled,"My Heartfelt" which can be played at my side bar. My other 2 songs entitled,"Awesome" & "My Precious Life" which were composed early this year. Actually, I've made a numerous song a few years back but never been recorded. The way I composed song is based on my feelings where I hardly can't express my feeling in words, and played piano in a spontaneously way and recorded at the same time. I don't do the score coz I cannot read notes & play by ear only. Since this blog is mainly for photography, I was thinking whether should I build another blog for my music??? Hmmm...thinking..thinking...thinking..???

Canon EOS Seminar

Mr Kaz Chua tested the new DSLR.

My friends & I attended the Canon EOS Seminar which was held at Shangrila's Tanjung Aru Resort. This was their second time the Canon organized this event in Sabah, previously they organized it in west Malaysia quite often. The Canon organizing team came all the way from KL & their main highlight was to promote new product DSL camera & pixma printer (http://www.canon.com.my/canon_new/hot/eos_seminar_kk.php).

At the same time, they also brought models for us to shoot for competition. Though my friends & I are not Canon user but we are Nikonians, came there just to explore our skill to shoot the models. I think about 240 participants came though requirement only 150 seats available on first come first serve basis. Thanks to my friend, Gordon of Fotomat who made the reservation for us earlier.

During the slideshow presentation, they(Canon) showed us the quality image produced by their new EOS 5D Mark II & 50D. No doubt that those camera are good & its produce good quality pictures.

For me, my opinion only lah ahh...all DSLRs of any brands are good. But it's a matter of how we utilize the camera setting, get familiarize with it & know how to shoot artistically. Another thing is the photo printer, it depends on the people who do the printing & the printer machine. Though we take good images & we send it for printing at photo shop but the images printed out not as we expected, coz I know, this thing happens to me before. So, erm...I don't want to elaborate more on this coz I probably might hurt someone's feeling especially photographers...:-).

Anyway, these are the images I've taken during the seminar.

Winners of Digital Photography Bootcamp Announced

The first Nexus Resort Karambunai Digital Photography Bootcamp ended with Gilbert Wong taking the top prize with his photograph titled “Beauty and the Beast”.

The bootcamp attracted 32 participants from around Kota Kinabalu who went through an exhausting day of photography workshop conducted by renowned local photographer Loius Pang. The workshop included a session on digital post-processing and a practical around the resort in the morning. Then it was up to the participants to put their skills to the test where they had to take photos and digitally process them before submitting their best five shots for the photo competition before the day ended at 11pm.

The result was an amazing collection of photographic creativity, composition and technique. The bootcamp and competition was open to all skills levels but despite the difference, the judges were impressed by the overall showing of all the participants.

Before the winners were announced, participants were given a slide presentation of all the photographs submitted and the shortlist which was given a critical commentary by Louis Pang himself. And the final results were Gilbert Wong in first place, John Eddy Joklis in second and Murphy Ng in third.

Mr Peter Sprenger, Group General Manager of Nexus Resort, presented the prizes to the winners. He was accompanied on stage by Ms Wong Seu Lin of Tabin Wildlife Resort and Ms Tova Waage of Sabah Air Aviation.

The winner of the bootcamp photography competition received a 3D/2N tour for 2 persons to Tabin Wildlife Reserve sponsored by Tabin Wildlife Resort, a 20-minute helicopter joyride sponsored by Sabah Air Aviation, and a 2D/1N stay at Nexus Resort Karambunai with dinner for two at Olives Mediterranean Restaurant. The second and third place winners won dining vouchers, a helicopter joyride and aromatherapy massage at the exclusive Borneo Spa. Epson Trading (M) Sdn Bhd provided the use of their colour printers for participants to print out their digital photos for the competition.

Students walks to school

It was early morning, on the way back to Telupid from Sekolah Kebangsaan Penangah Tongod, these students walks several miles to school. My heart is aching when I saw this. It reminds me my school time, I also walk to school but just a few minits walk compare to them which took a few hours to reach school. You know why? Because...the road condition is badly not been developed. It takes about 4.5 to 5 hour from Pekan Telupid to SK Penangah Tongod. People's needs have not been materialize for years....

NEW PRODUCT FROM NIKON: NIKON D90

Earlier in the week I posted that Nikon have released their new Nikon D90 DSLR, a camera which they are proudly publicizing is the first DSLR to shoot with HD Video.

In the comments on that post the main theme being discussed is whether video belongs on a DSLR.

We’ve long seen video on point and shoot cameras (and I see a lot of people shooting video that way when I’m out and about) but does video belong on a DSLR?
Video on DSLRs? The Debate So Far

My Thoughts on Video on a DSLR

I’ll have to admit - that my first thought when I saw this being touted as a killer feature of the D90 was to giggle. The thought of whipping out a DSLR to shoot video feels weird (to me at least). I’ve done video on my point and shoot and mobile phone and even found the fact that they shoot video to be quite handy - but a DSLR?

However - my mind then started to take over some of my feelings. As Andrionni points out above - the possibilities of shooting video through a DSLR are interesting. It would not be limited to shooting through a tiny 3x optical zoom than most point and shoots come with - you could fit any lens you like. Wide angle, macro, fisheye, super telephoto zoom…. While the quality will be undoubtably lower than a purpose built HD video camera - I can actually see times where it could be fun and useful to have the ability to switch my trusty DSLR into video mode and start shooting.

Would I be tempted to trade in my video camera for a DSLR - not any time soon - but would I use video on a DSLR? Probably - but I’m sure it’d feel weird at first and will get a few odd looks from others.
